Player review video - Tomas Holmström... And a goodbye

This has already been written by so many people. And I am in no state to add anything to what the others Wings bloggers wrote. But I remember watching the morning re-runs of hockey games in early 95 and noticing this guy with amazing skill and even more heart. From I graduated from hockey scool to organized hockey later that year, that guy became my hero. I worshipped him. I loved him to death. He is the guy, that even four years after his retirement, never ceases to amaze me and make me appreciate him more than ever when I watch old clips. For Stevie going to Tampa was probably the right decision. I am truly happy for him and the opportunity he is getting. I am even adopting the Bolts as my Leastern Conference team. And the move makes sense. But still, it feels like a little piece of my soul was ripped out. Seeing Stevie in another organization is like watching your wife fuck another man. Don't ask me to be okay with it. I'm not. I will probably never be okay with it. It feels like sacrilege. It feels wrong. And I still really need to puke. So good luck to Stevie and a big fuck you to the hockey gods. Fuck you Jobu! What's next? DMac becoming the GM of the Avs? That'd be a fitting encore. Anyway. Thanks for 27 wonderful years of service Stevie. You will always be number 1, even if you broke my heart to pieces today.

Anywho. Over to the real deal (it was a rush job, so I placed the mic wrong and the sound sucks arse.. sorry):

Sorry for no video yesterday. A combination of tiredness and not wanting to show off the annoying pimple under my bottom lip made me decide not to do one. Today I decided to forget about vanity and make one anyway. Enjoy

If Lidström leaves

As I have said before, I love making depth charts and line combos when I am bored at work and here is what I did today. I kinda thought it a bit too farfetched, irrelevant and depressing for now, but due to popular demand (Rob from Wings win, eh?) I am posting it.

If Lidström stays, the depth chart on defense is pretty much locked up. Kindl replaces Lilja and that is it. But what if he goes? I have already stated (on TOV) that I want the Wings to sign Derek Morris and Volchenkov then. So I kinda made some depth charts with them in them:

Morris - Rafalski
Kronwall - Stuart
Volchenkov - Ericsson

This one has a good 1st pair of all round defensemen with offensive skills, the Kro-Stuy pairing and Volchenkov gets to watch over E.

Volchenkov - Stuart
Morris - Rafalski
Kronwall - Ericsson

Three kinda equal pairings: One shutdown pair extraordinaire, one all round one and a Swedish one.

Volchenkov - Rafalski
Morris - Stuart
Kronwall - Ericsson

This one has three equal ones again and all of them are quite good both offensively and defensively.

Volchenkov - Morris
Kronwall - Stuart
Rafalski - Ericsson

So, we get two very balanced pairs and an offensively exciting, but very scary pair in E and Rafa.

These are the pairings I could imagine if this happened. Which it won't. So now you wasted two minutes of your time. Congrats.

Fight Night's year in review

This site hasn't been online for a full year yet, but I have already made a ton of new friends, learnt a lot, got my face on the video screen at the Joe five times, made so many new friends, been mentioned, quoted and linked to on Puck Daddy and did I mention all the friends I've made. So I have decided to take a look back at the season and what I have written. Dunno how it will turn out, but it will be a long one, with a plethora of links back to old posts. So.. this will probablt not appear for several days after I write this, because it is a big job. I think. But let's go. Here starts my adventure of reading every frickin word on this blog.

This blog was concieved after a long period of thinking. It all started when I got hooked on The Triple Deke and then Snipe snipe, Dangle dangle and then a whole lot of other Wings blogs. I started to think about how it would be to have my own hockey blog. And during games I started thinking about what I would write if I had one. So, on Tuesday November 3rd 2009, I was sitting at the uni, tired and bored, not in shape to do what I was supposed to do. So I started this blog instead. I was always clear on the fact that this first and foremost was supposed to be a Red Wings blog, but that there had to be a Norwegian perspective. And the first post was about current and former Norwegian NHLers and especially the two ex-Wings among them.

So... Hey! Welcome to this blog! As of now I of course have no readers and probably won't get any so what better time to write about Norwegian Red Wing history?

This is a Norwegian Red Wings blog with the emphasis on "Red Wings", but just for today, I feel nationalistic and I will hereby present the two Norwegians who have (for a veeeery short time) been Wings.

These were the first lines ever posted on this blog. They are from the aformentioned first post, which you can find here.

The next posts were previews and a write up on Stevie Y's Hall of Fame induction. I could never seem to catch a game early enough and get enough time to write a recap.

November 12th 2009
I finally get around to write my first recap. It was of the 9-1 game against the BJs and it followed the first of many blueprints for recap writing. Finding the right format is hard and I feel sure I didn't find the right one here.

November 13th 2009
The first picture of Kristen Bell is posted on the blog:

November 19th 2009I react to the Brad May non-goal with anger, anger and more anger. The next day I did a follow up, "translating" and dissecting the NHL's explanation of the call.

November 24th 2009
First of all, I changed up the format of the recaps again. But most importantly, I reached out to get readers. The few readers I had before that were all from a hockey forum I post at now and then. So I decided to send this email out to the people I had blogrolled:

Hi

I'm a Norwegian guy who started my own Red Wings blog a few weeks ago. Up until now, my readers have been friends from a few forums and a few other people, but I really want to get a broader base of readers. Therefore, I ask you guys, the bloggers I myself read religiously, if any of you would be willing to mention my blog on your classy blogs, have me in your blogroll or give me some tips on how to get some more people to read my blog? I would be really thankful if anyone took the time to do this.

Sorry for taking up your time

Thanks up front

Go Wings!
Anders, Oslo, Norway

As you might notice, I forgot to post a link, which Triple Deke Tyler reminded me to do. He and several others responded to the email, and gave helpful advice. TPL had already blogrolled me, God knows how they found me. And I ended up on people's blogrolls. I finally stepped into this amazing community. And I wanna thank everyone for letting me in. It also lead to this interview over at Snipe Dangle.

December 10th 2009
I start watching every game live and not on demand later. I do my first "live-blog". Reading this will show you why this died very soon.

I also decide to blame the following people for Dan Cleary's injury. Yes, this was in my "I hate Bertuzzi"-period.

December 11th 2009
I try some psychology on the Red Wings. You can read it here. It kinda worked. Here's a few excerpts:

How would it boost the confidence of players like the already fragile Ville Leino to read that the bloggers are giving up and that they feel he should be playing in the Afghan elite league or something like that?

And Ville, you're doing great man. I can see that you're working hard and with passion every night. Sooner or later the goals will come. Believe me! Trust me!

I also decided to take a look at exactly how dominant Zetterberg is and found out that he is the world's most dominant player

December 14th 2009
My Monday morning thoughts contains a plug for the first TOV episode and the first in a long series of hints and ass licking to try and get in on the action.

I also debuted a new preview format. It was good, but it just took too much time, so I abandoned it after a while.

I also recapped the crazydebut of Kris Newbury and premiered a recap format that would stay for several months.

December 29th 2010
I preview the Norwegian Olympic roster. You can read it here

January 4th 2010
I review the first part of the season and it comes off much more positive than expected.

January 5th
I release the first Swedish player name pronounciation guide. The file is still available for download it seems.

I also answer Nurse Nitz's contest winner question about what I would do if I took Gary's job. I also give you a day in the life of Gary Bettman. Read it here.

January 15th
I start a game recap with a rant towards Metalli-haters. I also give the NHL farfetched lockout advice.

Steve Ott's shootout "goal" leaves me a tiny bit pissed.

January 18th
All the hinting and ass licking paid off. I make my TOV debut.

January 19th
I dream up a NHL job interview.

January 26th

Sorry for the lack of a video yesterday, but I had been awake for 30 hours and went to sleep right after 7 PM :P So instead, I did a 2-for-1 today. And the jersey numbers somehow decided to make it a "Guys who disappointed me"-video. It's in two parts since Youtube doesn't accept 10 minutes+ videos.

And even though his death turned out to be a hoax, Ronnie James Dio is very sick with stomach cancer, so let's all appreciate him while he is still alive with these two classics:

Video player review - Justin Abdelkader

So, I kinda got this idea about talking instead of writing, really just to overcome the laziness where you write less than you planned. So this feature will run every day (I hope) for a few weeks. I hope you enjoy it, and I am sorry for me having a horrible hair day. Couldn't be arsed to fix it.

The horror. The horror

The horror. The horror.

Well, this series is one of the weirdest I have ever seen, with refereeing fucked up beyond belief. Yet, this series was lost because of an inability to win the tight games, and inability to win the important draws and a complete lack of power play success when it mattered. Still, if you had offered me this in February I would have been happier than haooy to take it. But tonight, it stings. It feels like shit. We had a great season considering everything that happened, but it is frustrating to see them go down like this when we know they have the potential to be the best team in the NHL. Sadly their season got thrown by injuries that hindered chemistry and most of all identity struggles as they never quite consistently found the old, real one after having to change it up because of injuries. And now it is 5 fucking months without hockey. We all know that hockey without the Red Wings aren't real hockey. We are about to face the horror of the long, horrible off season. The horror will likely not match what Kurtz saw deep in the Congo river (or in Cambodia if you prefer movies), but it's gonna be pain to write fluff pieces here for five months.

On the bright side, I can promise you two things:
1. I will be here all through the summer and in to the next season. I promise not to kinda forget and just end up letting the blog die.
2. I am only 95% sure I can pull it together and I don't know how fast I will be able to throw it around, but soon, hopefully in the next few days I will debut a very exciting off season feature, that will run for nearly a month.

I also want to thank the Wings for a great season, a memorable season, a character season, where they have fought not only opponents, but the worst injury streak ever and NHL refereeing.

Most of all, I want to thank each of every one of you who reads this, everyone who follows me on twitter and the blogosphere in general. This has been the most amazing season I have experienced, because of each and every one of you. Thank you for that. I feel lucky to have gained so many new "fake" friends.

Recap
Jeez, what a horrible period. The Sharks came out with a huge jump. The Wings weathered it and looked like they were getting back in it, but then collapsed and allowed some HUGE Sharks chances after about 5 minutes. A little before the halfway point of the period the Wings looked like they were on their way back in, but then Franzén got called for interference on a call as lame as any in this series. He barely touched Pavelski, who didn't try to stop and ran into the goal. The kill was great, but the Sharks kept pressure througout the rest of the period. With one and a half minutes left Franzén got called on a hook that was kinda deserved, especially as he was out of position, but Joe "I call people out for diving" Thornton did a good job selling it too. The part of the penalty in the first period was a barrage of shots and chances, but an amazing Jimmah and luck helped them out. The Wings need less turnovers, better positioning, patience and some puck possession in the second.

The second period started on the PK. It was killed off and after some scrambling, the Wings went on attack and scored. Rafa took a nice point shot, Bertuzzi screened and the puck went in. We were for a moment moved to a slightly better part of hockey purgatory. We would soon return to the seventh circle though. Brad Stuart got called for elbowing. A borderline call, could have been okay, but yet again the fans had to start making noise and Pavelski had to turn around and look at the ref before Fucktard O'Halloran decided to call it. On the PP Thornton caught the Wings running around and scored after 6 seconds. The Wings pushed back and Pavelski got called for a laaarge hook. The PP was horrible though. Struggled like shit with the entries. When it ended, the Sharks went straight on the PP, after Bertuzzi had tried to reach for the puck and Blake pinned his arm to the boards so he couldn't remove it. O'Halloran called it anyway. The PK was puring fucking money though and the Wings went back on attack. A little after the halfway point the Wings had some huge chances and got a PP. It was a little better, but didn't score. The Wings continued dominating and had more chances. With four minutes left Marc-Eduard Vlasic, what a douchebag name BTW, decided that Valtteri Filpulla's career had lasted long enough and tackled him with one of the meanest knee hits I have ever seen. Luckily both guys were unharmed, but the fact he got two and didn't, as Murph thought he should, get thrown out of the game is laughable. The Wings were lucky too though, not taking a penalty for going after M-E Fuckface. The Wings were fantastic on the PP and really for the rest of the period. Sadly, Nabokov were even better.

The third period, well I can't really detail it. The Sharks dominated early, but the Wings pressured towards the end. Here are some key moments:
- Joe Pavelski gets a cheap penalty shot and misses
- The refs miss a huge headshot by Murray on Franzen
- And a smaller, but still bad one on Murray by Stuart.
- The Sharks score off a bad Rafa turnover.
- Gaaaaah

Thoughts
- As those of you following me on Twitter knows, I am not a fan of the North American tradition of National Anthems being performed by solo singers. I prefer the European way with marching bands or choirs. It becomes less pompous and show-offy and more graceful. But tonight. Jesus Fucking Mother of God! The woman who sang could not carry a tune if her life depended on it. She was slightly off at almost every note. HORRIBLE.
- I love Mick! He and Ken are obviously kinda forced into not saying what they feel about the refs, but they both were absolutely stunning in their sarcasm about them tonight.
- The faceoffs are becoming a farce. More times than not someone gets thrown out. Just stupid. It especially gets me when a team has a clean win, the ref whistles it dead and proceeds to throw out a guy from the team that LOST the faceoff. Moronic.
- If justice shall be served, the NHL should suspend Brad Stuart for 2-3 games next season for his headshot and Murray and Vlasic should get 5+ games each.

3 things that worked
- Jimmah saved them through the first.
- Good pushback in the second.
- Ken and mick

3 things that didn't work
- Came out flat, positioned themselves badly and made too many turnovers in the first.
- PK fail on the Thornton goal.
- Inability to get the goals.

Play of the game
Jimmah's late save to keep them in. AMAZING.

Player of the game
Todd Bertuzzi. He hustled like nobody's buisness

Let's make it two

As happy as I am for the Red Wings winning game 4, it is kind of a fucked situation. Many people reported on how calm they felt before that game. I was the same for a while. I think that through our thing hopes and ramblings of an epic comeback, we knew deep down inside that it was gonna be impossible. Then the Wings go out and absolutely dominate, sodomize, skullfuck, humiliate the San Jose Sharks, reminding us of the fact that when this Wings team are ON their game, no other team stands a chance. And now we have legitimate hope. We feel like this can happen. We know the chances are small, but we now have hope. So my dear Red Wings, now that you have done that and put us in a situation where a loss is gonna slap us that much harder, you will have to go out and do it again.

Keys to the game
- Jimmah needs to be on his game.
- The Sharks will come out hard and agressive, looking for vengeance. We need to weather that storm.
- Can the Mule keep being hot and score a goal or five?
- Attention Pavel Datsyuk, we need you to show up again.
- Preferably with Z also having a good game.
- No pinching.
- Discipline! We have gotten Fucktard O'Halloran tonight and that could get nasty.

I Believe!

A tribute to a hockey mom

Today is one of the shittiest days of the year. My mom would have been 47 today. But somehow the universe decided not to let her get to that place. When she was 22, she was diagnosed with a rare liver disease. She could live with it as long as she took her medicines, but it weakened her immune defense systems. In 2002 we came pretty close to losing her, but she pulle through. After that, she had internal bleedings in the oesophagus a couple of times, nothing serious, but you know, annoying stuff. Then, in late september 2007 she had another bleeding, was admitted to the hospital, and there they found out she had another infection. They couldn't locate it (it turned out to be peritonitis, but they found out in the post-mortem) and after 2,5 days in an artificial coma, she passed away at 3:05 AM October 1st 2007. This is my tribute to her.

There are a lot of things to say about my mother. She was beautiful, kind and a person who left a mark on everyone she ever met. My aunt recently was at a dinner party and met a woman who worked with her for a year. When she found out my aunt was my mom's sister in law, she broke down cryin. But this is a hockey blog, and I think a description of her as a hockey mom is a nice way to talk about the kind of person she was.

With the condition my mom had, it would have been easy to kind of live a half life. Not work that much, avoid having kids and taking things easy to live a longer life. OH HELL NO! My mom could never deal with that. She finished her law studies, did years of work in the Department of Environmental protection and then end up as the head of the law department at the National Anti-pollution agency. Over that time she also found the time to have four kids. And she and my dad never held back a second when it came to letting us be active. I played football and hockey as a kid, as did my brother (he still plays hockey), my oldest baby sister used to play football and do cross country skiing and she still plays footie. My smallest sister still does both of those things. My parents were always there when I played hockey. They would be at 95 % of my practices and one, or often both of them, would be at every game. My mom was never very interested in sports. And because of that she would mostly stay at home in the evenings and tend to the house while my dad watched me practice and drove everyone around. But when my dad was away on buisness, or the one or two days per week when they switched, she would drive us, watch me practice and have a huge interest in what we were doing. She was never a hockey fan, but when I started playing it was completely natural for her to become a fan and she had a huge interest in the hockey me and my brother were playing. She became a fan to the degree where she perfectly could break down a game or practice and tell me what I had done well and what I had done wrong. I know she hated the machoism between the hockey parents, as did I, and so did my father, but she would sit with them and be as interested as anyone else. She was the woman who would either drive me 7 times per week or have an extra dinner ready when I came home from practice, no matter when. She decided that she would rather have a full life and do everything for her kids, than a long life. And as hard as it is dealing with her being gone, I am still grateful for that. It was 19 and a half wonderful years.

I feel I have failed in writing this. I know I cannot in any way give a good enough representation of who she was and how wonderful she was. It is easy to glorify the dead, but believe me, she was the most selfless woman I have ever met. The most purely good person I have ever met and even the co-workers she struggled with, because they didn't like strong leadership, still send us flowers at her birthday, they still have a huge picture of her at her workplace. My dad probably summed her up the best, when he, an atheist, said that she was the perfect Christian. Good, selfless, never pushing her religion on anyone, just living as Jesus told us to live.

I don't know why I am writing this, I am hungover, sad and just need to went. Sorry for taking up your time with this.

Mom, happy birthday, thank you for your love, kindness and support. Thank you for being there for me every day for 19 and a half years. Thank you for still being there for me in my heart. I love you more than you know, more than I ever managed to tell you. I miss you every day, and in every moment. It is not the same without you.

Mule says: NOT TONIGHT!

Wow-wow-wee-wah! The Mule went out and decided he wanted more games this season. Awesome. But as decisive as today's win was we cannot bask in the glory for too long. Yes we outplayed them, but they will come back hard after a humiliation like this. But well, this proves that why the fuck shouldn't the Wings be able to come back and take four straight? It's gonna be a stretch, but it is possible.

Recap
Jesus H. Franzen, what a first period the Mule had. After a couple of early chances he jumped on the ice too fast and the Wings got nailed with a too many men. They killed it with beauty. Then, the Sharks took a dumb tripping in the offensive zone. PP Wings. Homer decided early in the PP that we haven't seen enough of the Fuck you I'm Pavel Datsyuk-Pasha and decided to go Fuck you I'm Pavel Datsyuk-Homer on us. He deked a guy and surprised everyone by taking the puck to the net. No goal though. But late in the PP, the Mule took a shot that went through Bert's screen and in. Less than two minutes later he drove the net, took Z's rebound and scored while falling. Close to goalie interference, but good goal. And just a little later, he got a beautiful spin-o-rama pass from Bert and scored again. Hat trick. And he wasn't done. After Boyle had decided to bat a puck out of mid air with his hand, Mule found it, shot, took the rebound and scored. The Sharks had some attacks after that and got a PP, but the kill was excellent. And the Wings attacked again towards the end. Datsyuk had an amazing keepaway session with Vlasic as the victim, then dominated another shift, drew a delayed penalty and when Boyle tried to bat it away it went in off a skate. Flip got the credit. And yeah, Mule almost got his fifth late in the period.

In the first intermission, the first Mule goal was changed to Bertuzzi's leg. KILLJOYS!

Just two minutes into the second, Dwight Helminen took his second tripping penalty and on the PP, Bert had a great cross ice pass to Rafa who scored off a nice one timer. That was followed by another PP after Clowe had tried to push a Wings player into the tiny box with Ray Ferraro. They got too cute though. The Wings kept control and at times it seemed like they were on the PP. They got back on it when Thornton sucker punched Z and then claimed Z was diving. LOL! Fuck off Thornton, you are a Shark and should not talk about diving. Again too cute on the PP. The Draper got called on a little hook, but the best chances on the Sharks PP were two shorthanded chances for Datsyuk and Helm and Cleary and Helm respectively. The Sharks had a little life after that and got another PP off a Kronner interference. In the middle of a nice kill Lids was taken off for a VERY VERY small hook and on the 5-on-3 Heatley finally beat Howard cleanly with a slapper. The rest of the Nick penalty that was in the 2nd was killed off.

The 3rd started on the PK. It was killed off and a fest of penalties and rough stuff began. First Abbie and Demers went off for roughing. Then on the four on four Thornton decided to try and break Z's stick and was thrown out of the faceoff. Heatley came in, grabbed Z's stick and wrestled him to the ground. On the delayed call, the Wings went offside and Thornton decided to hit Homer after the whislte. Some roughing ensued and the following penalties were doled out: Heatley two for holding, Thornton 2+2 for holding and a 10 min misconduct. Should have been thrown out. What a fucking douchebag. Homer 2 for roughing. On the PP the Wings were a little too cute, but at the end Franzén got the rebound and scored his 4th of the night. Then the Wings powered on until Nichol finally found a dance partner in Abbie who gave him a nice beating. They both got 2 for roughing and 5 for fighting. Right after that Murray got two for roughing and Draper and Clowe got 10 mins each for yapping I guess. No idea really. A little later Huskins went for trying to maul Homer. On the two man advantage the 4th line had some nice chances, but the Z line were bad on the rest of the PP. The game sorta flared out from there, but also included Vlasic and Rafa getting 2 each for a sword fight. Good win.

Thoughts
- TSN is pretty good.
- The Joe was rocking.
- Scott Nichol ran around trying to fight everyone. What a hoser.
- I heard the refs tried to help Rosby and his guys, but failed. LOL!
- Thornton is a scumbag. In some ways he reminds me of Rosby.
- Stuart got hurt. Hope he will be okay.

3 things that worked
- Johan Franzen
- Offensive onslaught.
- Good PK

3 things that didn't work
- Took too many penalties
- Should have added a couple more PP goals.

On the brink

If there is any need to write motivational stuff today, this season is already over. It's win or go golfing, and it will be like that for the next four games. We need to do like the Leafs against the Wings in 42 or the Islanders against the Pens in 55 and come back from 0-3 to win a series. I believe that if anyone can do it, it is this team, but we need a much different performance from the first three games. Do it.

I am a bit excited for this because rumours say we might see Matthias Ritola tonight and you all know how much I love him.

Keys to the game
- Continue being strong on faceoffs
- Continue PK success
- Better discipline
- Be offensive minded for a full 60 minutes

Time to repay for 1955? - Also: UNACCEPTABLE

EDIT: As some dude named Brent pointed out in the comments, the Wings won the cup in 55, the choke happened in 42.. I kinda got a suspicion about that last night, but at that time I had gone to bed, so I didn't bother. Shame on me for not fact checking

I could choose to blame the goal that was wrongly blown off, or the penalty towards the end, but I won't. This game was lost because the Wings started coasting and lost their energy and focus after they went up 3-1. That is bad, unacceptable, and just terrible. Howard wasn't good, but neither were the rest of the team.

On the bright side: We are owed one of these. In 1955 the Wings blew a 3-0 Stanley Cup Final series lead and lost 4-3 to the Leafs. This is the year to make up for that.

Btw, I just wanna throw this word in a few more times: UNACCEPTABLE, UNACCEPTABLE, UNACCEPTABLE, UNACCEPTABLE, UNACCEPTABLE, UNACCEPTABLE, UNACCEPTABLE, UNACCEPTABLE,

Recap
The Wings came out strong and had control early in the game. The Sharks had a few chances, but the Wings were definitely in control. They got a PP off a high sticking call, but it was negated after 4-5 seconds later when Homer and some Shark got together and Homer allegedly slashed him. Anywho. A little later Flipper found Z who scored. But it went off his skate. The review overruled the ref and said "no goal". There was NO kicking motion. He knew what he was doing, but there was no kicking motion, shit call. The Sharks had life for a little while after that, but then Franzen took the puck around the net and fed it to Homer. It went off his skate too, but it was so obviously accidental that they had to call it a goal. Just after that Abbie ended up taking a penalty as the fourth guy into a scrum. Kinda random, but who cares, the PK was perfect. A little after that the Wings got a break. Some Shark pushed the puck in his own crease, but probably never blocked it. It was (probably wrongly) judged a penalty shot, but Z got robbed on a huge save by Nabokov. The Wings continued going hard though and got a goal when Miller ended a long period of pressure by feeding Cleary who scored. But with a second left Setoguchi scored on a shot Jimmah should have had. Shit way to end an excellent period.

The second started with a nice Wings chance before a couple of great Sharks chances. Then, after two minutes Zetterberg banked a shot off Murray's skate and in. 3-1. Just after that Bert got called on a hooking call. Not much of a hook, but one of those you know is gonna be called every time. Luckily the PK was MONEY! The Wings controlled the next part of the period, but the Sharks had the most pressure. Around halfway through the period E took a holding call which was a right call, but should have been coupled with an embellishment. Luckily the Wings PK was excellent again, even though it was without Helm (he took a puck in his chest, but returned later). Then the Wings got on the PP and had some huge chances, but no goals. The rest of the period saw chances both ways, but in the last minutes the Sharks got some chances off turnovers and with 30 seconds left Franzén got his stick between Pavelski's legs. Pavelski was already falling, but I guess it's a penalty anyway. The part of the penalty that was in the 2nd period was killed off.

The third started on the PK. It was killed off nicely, but the Sharks kept the pressure on and the Wings were anemic. After 5 minutes, the Datsyuk line got outworked, Thornton took it around the net and scored off Pasha's stick. The Wings got a little life off of that, but not much. And with 6-7 mins left they scored again. A shot from a dead angle went in. Horrible by Howard. The Wings started after that and were really building a great attack when Homer and Boyle battled and Boyle crashed into Nabokov who was like 5 meters out of his net. Nabby decided to flop around like crazy and the Sharks got a PP with 2:48 left. Luckily the KILL was excellent and the Wings got some chances in the last seconds. Overtime coming.

The overtime was very tentative at first, noone dared trying too hard offensively. But when E finally did dare to try and drove the net, no one covered for him and the Sharks got a 2-on-1, no chance for Rafa and Howard. Fuck my life.

Thoughts
- Loved the "Bullshit" chants at the Joe
- On the Z non goal: He knew what he was doing, he was trying to direct it in. He probably wanted to get his sticm on it later. But he didn't kick it, he didn't propel it, he just turned his skate slightly. And the replay was in no way conclusive. When the call on the ice is a goal, those replays should lead to the goal standing.
- Beer commercials provoke me. 1) Men do not drink light beer. 2) Miller is not real beer, neither is Bud. Those two are a weak mix of water and piss.
- The Datsyuk line got outplayed badly defensivley all night. Unacceptable.

3 things that worked
- Good, aggressive start. Much better at face-offs.
- Great PK
- Awesome PK

3 things that didn't work
- You DO NOT let in goals in the last minute.
- Allowed the ref to send them to the box way too often.
- Seemed to slack off at 3-1.

Play of the game
The Cleary goal was nice

Player of the game
Usain had a great game and was huge on the PK.

Knife to throath - and some blabber on refereeing

I have no idea if that is a legit phrase in English, but in Norwegian it means that you have to perform, you have to win. And the Wings have to do that tonight. No matter what the Sharks and the refs throw at them tonight, they have to rise above it, play a disciplined game and deliver a win for us tonight. And I have faith, I believe. I think the Wings will come out hard and I actually expect a big win tonight. I can't believe anything else. Just can't.

Keys to the game
- Discipline. The Sharks will dive, the refs will buy it. Keep it clean, and keep your feet moving.
- Win more face-offs
- Get better at clearing the zone
- Tighter PK
- Stop with the stopping right inside the offensive blueline thing. It only leads to turnovers.

On refereeing
I have heard so much about how the Wings fans need to stop blaming the referees. I don't buy that. We have gotten jobbed so many times the last couple of years and in this series we've been hosed harder than ever. Conspiracy? No. I don't think so. I don't wanna think so, but it is hard not to. Whatever it is, the refereeing has been a fucking disgrace in this series. If you want more info on that, Drew, the blogging-machine supreme over at Nightmare on Helm Street has written some superb posts about it.

What I really want to talk about are these few points:
- I am tired of no one taking us seriously, we got jobbed, we have gotten jobbed a lot of times. If media, the NHL and everyone else choose to ignore that, well that pisses me off.
- George Malik has gotten a lot of shit for calling out the refs lately and also for believeing in the Wings. First Lambert got on his case and then Wyshynki attacked him for saying that the refs give us a reason to wear tin-foil. Both the articles he has been attacked for has been stellar writing, as most of George's stuff is and it pisses me off to an extreme degree that they attack him for it. I am very close to never reading Puck Daddy ever again.
- I keep hoping the Wings will get the calls one day, but I have no faith in it, so I think the team has to play cleaner than clean for the rest of the playoffs.
- Good friend of Fight Night Sara has had an excellent idea about a tin foil flash mob before the game tonight. You can still join. For more details click here or here. Do it!
- Last of all, as a glimmer of hope, one member of the mainstream media has actually noticed the horrible refereeing. And it is very nice, because I have meant to plug his show here for a few weeks. Sean Gentille of the Sporting News and the excellent SN Grindcast (he makes it weekly with Craig Custance and it is GREAT) replied to a tweet I made by saying this on his Twitter account:
I'm not about to throw the tinfoil hat cop-out, but I'd frame it more as general incompetence. The Heatley/Nabby calls? Pretty brutal. Second period of Habs/Pens got ridiculous too. Zero consistency, period. We've become numb to it, and that's part of the problem. Asking for consistency, regardless of quality, is a sad standard.

He also later clarified via a direct message that he did not mean to call me a tin foil hat wearer, but that the Wings fans wear tin foil hats-line is a copout. So there is hope.

Last of all, some inspiration for tonight's game:

And most of all, BELIEVE:

The universe

It's the universe. Can you hear it? It is talking to us, and holding up a big middle finger. It says FUCK YOU DETROIT! We lose the game on a ridculous broken stick. The refs decide to suck harder than Jenna Jameson ever did. It felt at times like the Red Wings were battling ten men out there. I don't blame them at all for getting flustered and shitting it up after the 4-3 goal. How do you answer such a flurry of bad luck, bad breaks and horrific officiating? The bad thing: We are down 2-0. That is TROUBLE. The good thing: We could (and should) have won both games. Win two at home and we are good. And to the universe: FUCK YOU TOO!

Recap
The first started with some wild Sharks pressure and chances and they got a PP after 40 seconds. It took Versus a minute to find out that it was on Howard. It was nicely killed off. Then the Wings had some nice chances. Then the Sharks came back, but Pasha snapped up a turnover, deked two guys and scored off a nice shot. But the Sharks soon got a PP on a very well-sold goalie interference call. On the PK the Wings lost some faceoffs and Pavelski scored on a point-shot. The Sharks scored another immediately. I didn't see it, seeing as ESPNplayer is still sucking dick. The Wings came back though, got a PP and after a frustrating minute and a half Rafa took a point shot that Homer deflected in. The rest of the period was back and forth, but the Sharks had the best pressure. Towards the end of the period Datsyuk was called on a cross-check. Okay call, but should have been embellishment on Dive-o-guchi too. The Wings need to be faster on loose pucks, win more faceoffs and stop turning the puck over at both bluelines.

The second started with the rest of the PK. Or not. Apparently Marleau had taken a boarding penalty. Anywho, the 4-on-4 went fine. And the end of the short PP Nick blasted a canon in the net. After that the Wings had pressure for a while, but it was broken up on a mysterious call where Bertuzzi was pushed so he barely touched Nabokov, who dived like it was the Olympics. The PK did a good job though, and escaped with only one close call. After that there was a long while of trucculent, wild hockey. The Sharks might have had more zone time, but the Wings had better chances. Hits were dealt all around and it was wild and messy. And then Stuart got an interference penalty, that might have been okay, were it not for the Sharks player falling like he was just sniped. It was nicely killed and the last minute wa a flurry of Wings chances.

The third started with a Wings PP, on it, Johan Franzén got überbuttrapefucked but got no call. But once Bertuzzi touched on of the fragile ones in teal, minor penalty. On that PP Kronwall got unlucky and took a tripping minor. 5-on-3, tie game. The Wings killed the rest, killed another, pushed back, but then Nick's stick broke on a shot giving the Sharks a 3-on-1. Sharks lead. The Wings tried, but got penalized again, for a trip that was okay, but borderline. They luckily got a bogus goalie interference call going their way, but got nothing. When they pulled Howard they took a too many men. Game over. FML.

Thoughts
- Anyone else as amused by the boo-birds in San Jose as me? I get booing calls and non-calls, but booing Stuy, defensemen who wait for line changes and stuff like that is just ridiculous.
- Fucking Keith Jones saw it was a god damn dive fest. Refs are jokes. And I really thought Todd McLellan was better than telling his guys to dive left and right.
- The goalie interference thing should be loosened, not tightened. And now that the refs have shown they are totally unable to get it right I am close to suggesting letting the goalies be fair game.

3 things that worked
- The team worked hard and well. Zetterberg was great.
- Good PP.
- Good hustle

3 things that didn't work
- Too slow at loose pucks. Too many turnovers at both bluelines. Both these in the first.
- Need to win more faceoffs.
- The universe were better
